Diving Conditions for Lake Rawlings:

More Info:http://www.lakerawlings.com/

Date of Report: Oct 18, 2009
H20 Temp: 68Air Temp: 39Visibility in Feet: 30Current: 0
Details:

Visibility good even though a lot of divers present.  Temperature ran about 68 degrees unless you went to the airplane or on the deep tour.

Air temperature was COLD that morning.  The water felt good as it was quite a bit warmer.  The divers spent an extra 20 minutes on the dive to enjoy the warmer water.

H20 Temp: 77Air Temp: 75Visibility in Feet: 40Current: 0
Details:

Weather was partially cloudy with air temp in the mid 70's.  Viz was at
least 40ft in most places.  Water surface temp was around 77 deg with a
gradual cooling towards the thermocline which was at around 35 ft on the
north side of the lake (diver entry and docks).  The bottom temp was
around 58-59 deg at 60ft.  Interestingly, the South side of the lake,
the thermocline was a bit lower at around 40-41ft.  Very few people
there.  Henrico F&R was there training, but they stayed off to
themselves and didn't bother anyone.  Wednesday is "Half-Price" day
which made it even better.  The fishies seemed to be out a bit more,
perhaps because there weren't as many divers in the water.

We did two ~45min dives and mainly just explored around.  Followed one
guide line which went out to the middle of the lake and then stopped so
we continued on to the opposite wall, found the airplane and continued
our return.

Details:

Temperatures at Lake Rawlings are rising but not yet there.

Surface was 70 degrees but as soon as you descended the temperature dropped faster than you did.  On the 12 foot deep platform it was a measured 50 degrees.

It was so cold in the water that there were only 4 divers left to dive on Sunday.
