Q and A: Neck Cracks In Tanks

Many of you are aware that we require eddy testing of all aluminum cylinders. Most of you are also aware that the alloy used in aluminum cylinders was changed in the late 80s to prevent these neck cracks. You may have also heard that it is not necessary to do eddy testing on the newer alloy.

WRONG!!! Almost every year we find cylinders with neck cracks. Most are the older alloy but some are of the newest alloy. Recently one of our rental tanks developed a neck crack and was removed from service and condemed before it became a hazard. This cylinder was relatively new and was made of the newest alloy. Any cylinder can develop a neck crack or other defect. Proper inspection is critical to safety for you and for us.
